Private chef salaries vary greatly depending on many variables. The chef’s skill level, the country the position is in, and the general nature of the position are just part of the evaluation process that determines the salary a private chef can achieve. No two positions are the same, and many HNW and UHNW individuals and families who employ a private chef understand that the chef will be there to cater to their every wish, culinary requirement and dietary needs. For the chef, it’s a very personal employment engagement, meaning what they prepare will be determined by the client.
Being a private chef offers many employment options: you can work in the same household day in and day out, travel with the family from country to country, or be on call when the principal needs a private chef. I’ve heard of chefs who earn a very generous year-round salary while just cooking for the principal for 8 weeks during the summer vacation. It’s an industry where anything is possible, and opportunity is presented in so many different forms. I was personally lucky enough to work on a yacht in a 10-week-on, 10-week-off rota, being paid for the entire year and flown all over the world.
Salaries for private chefs can range from $ 2,500 to $15,000 USD per month. This is not to say that salaries can’t be higher; they can, and are for certain chefs. Lower salaries are more determined by a chef’s skill level and the employer’s working schedule. An employer who only wants 4 meals per week, as they have a busy schedule, would not need a chef every day. But also likes the familiarity of having the same chef, someone who understands their dietary needs. Higher-salaried chefs tend to be more professional, have much more experience, and are generally employed by principals who lead more dynamic lifestyles. For these chefs, it could mean preparing lunch in London at the principal’s home, then catching a flight that evening to their villa in the South of France, where they would prepare for their arrival the next day. Followed by a few weeks working on the principal’s yacht, entertaining guests.
The top five salaries for private chefs are: the USA with $300k, followed by the UK at $264k. Switzerland ranks third at $156k, Saudi Arabia at $136k and Belgium with $135k. The remaining rankings for 6-10 are: Monaco at $125k, UAE at $97k, and France at $68k.
10% of all clients are now looking for Michelin-starred experience, and while the statistics show that the countries that have the highest demand for private chefs are the USA-35%, UAE-20%, France and Monaco-20%, Switzerland-10% and the UK-10%.
Clients looking for private chef services generally want a chef who can confidently cook multiple cuisines, and a chef who can master them holds significant value and can claim a high salary for their services. Clients now seek restaurant-quality food in their home or yacht, and the role of ‘cooks’ in the home is becoming a thing of the past. Chefs with specialist knowledge of particular diets or nutrition are becoming increasingly popular, and demand is increasing.
